A Movie Scene Listening, Interstellar from B1 to C2

SCRIPT:

A little late, Coop.

Err, we had a flat.

It's an Indian surveillance drone.

Solar cells are powering the entire farm.

What did you do, Murph?

Cooper:

“You're a well educated man, Coop. And a trained pilot.”

Man:

“And an engineer.”

Man:

“The world doesn't need anymore engineers.”

Cooper:

“We didn't run out of planes and television sets...”

Cooper:

“...we ran out of food.”

Murph:

“Dad, why did you name me after something that's bad?”

Cooper:

“Oh, we didn't.”

Murph:

“Murphy's law?”

Cooper:

“Murphy's law doesn't mean that something bad will happen.”

Cooper:

“It means that whatever can happen, will happen.”

Brand:

“We must confront the reality that nothing in our solar system can help us.”

Brand:

“Now you need to tell me what your plan is to save the world.”

  • 1:01–1:06 — Dr. Brand: She explains that humanity isn't supposed to save Earth; the objective is to leave it.

  • 1:06–1:10 — Cooper / Dr. Brand: Cooper recognizes that the mission involves the Rangers, and Brand explains that the Endurance is their final expedition.

  • 1:10–1:13 — Cooper: He asks whether they sent people into space to find another place to live.

  • 1:13–1:14 — Dr. Brand: She identifies these as the Lazarus missions.

  • 1:14–1:17 — Cooper / Dr. Brand: Cooper makes a joke about the name; Brand explains the reference to Lazarus returning from the dead.

  • 1:17–1:21 — Cooper: He points out that Lazarus had to die first and questions how another planet could support human life when the nearest stars are incredibly distant.

  • 1:21–1:25 — Cooper: He asks where the astronauts were sent.

  • 1:25–1:31 — Dr. Brand: Brand says she cannot reveal more information unless Cooper agrees to pilot the spacecraft.

  • 1:31–1:36 — Dr. Brand / Cooper: Brand tells him that he was their best pilot. Cooper responds that he barely even left the stratosphere.

  • 1:39–1:43 — Dr. Brand: She explains that the team has only trained in the simulator and that they need a real pilot for this mission.

  • 1:43–1:47 — Cooper: He is surprised that he was supposedly trained for the mission without knowing it.

  • 1:47–1:50 — Cooper: He points out that, only an hour earlier, they didn't even know he was alive.

  • 1:50–1:55 — Dr. Brand: She says they had no choice and that something brought Cooper to them; according to her, they chose him.

  • 1:55–1:57 — Cooper: He asks who “they” are.

  • 1:57–2:01 — Cooper / Dr. Brand: Cooper asks how long he would be away. Brand says it is difficult to know and could be years. Cooper reminds her that he has children, and Brand tells him to go out there and save them
