General Tips for Listening B1 & B2

🎧 Listening Strategy Guide (B1 & B2)

The Listening paper lasts about 30–40 minutes. You will hear every recording twice. The secret to passing is not just "understanding English," but knowing how to avoid the "traps."

⏱️ The Golden Rule: Use Your "Gap Time"

Before each part, the recording will read instructions (e.g., "You will hear seven short extracts..."). Ignore them. You already know what to do!

  • Read the questions immediately: You have about 30–45 seconds.

  • Underline keywords: Focus on the main idea of each question.

  • Predict the answer: Ask yourself: "Am I listening for a name? A number? A feeling? A verb?"

🟢 Part 1: Multiple Choice (Short Clips)

You hear several short, unrelated conversations with three options (A, B, C).

  • Wait for the whole story: Usually, the speaker mentions words from all three options.

  • The "Agreement" Trap: If the question asks what they agree on, they will often say:

    • Speaker 1: "Let's go to the cinema." (Option A)

    • Speaker 2: "No, it's too expensive. How about the park?" (Option B)

    • Speaker 1: "The park is too far. Why don't we go to the cafe?" (Option C)

    • Speaker 2: "That sounds like a great idea."

    • The answer is C.

🔵 Part 2: Sentence Completion (The Gap-Fill)

You hear a long talk and must fill in 8–10 gaps with words from the audio.

  • The "No Changes" Rule: Write the exact word you hear. Do not change "running" to "run."

  • Keep it short: Most answers are just one or two words (usually a noun).

  • Spelling counts: In B1 and B2, you must spell common words correctly. If the word is very difficult, the speaker might spell it for you.

  • Grammar check: After writing the word, read the whole sentence. Does it make sense?

🟠 Part 3: Multiple Choice (The Interview)

A long conversation or interview with many questions.

  • Don't get lost: The questions follow the order of the audio. If you realize the speakers are talking about Question 15 and you are still waiting for Question 14... move on! Don't lose two points.

  • Synonyms are key: If the question says the girl was "unhappy," she might say she was "miserable" or "upset."

🟣 Part 4: Multiple Matching (B2 Only)

You hear five people talking about the same topic. You have to match what they say to a list of options.

  • Look for the main idea: Don't just listen for one word. If a speaker mentions "money," it doesn't always mean the answer is "financial problems." Listen to the context.

  • Second chance: Use the first time you hear it to get a general idea, and the second time to confirm your choice.

⚠️ The "Transfer" Time (5 Minutes)

At the end of the test, you have 5 minutes to copy your answers to the answer sheet.

  1. Be careful with the boxes: Make sure you put the answer for Question 1 in Box 1!

  2. NEVER leave a blank: If you have no idea, guess. You don't lose points for a wrong answer, and you might get lucky.

  3. Check your plurals: In the gap-fill, check if the word should be singular or plural (e.g., "apple" vs "apples").

💡 Final Teacher Tip: "The But-Trap"

Speakers in these exams love to change their minds. Listen for words like "But," "However," or "Actually."

  • Audio: "I wanted to be a doctor, but in the end, I decided to study history."

  • Question: What did the speaker study?

  • Answer: History.
