Del Toro has loved the story of Frankenstein since he was a child. He says that the monster is not only scary but also sad, because it wants to be understood. This idea is very important to him.

The director chose actors he had worked with before and trusted. He wanted performers who could show strong emotions, especially the feelings of fear, loneliness and hope. He believed this was necessary to make the story feel human.

TEXT (B2)

Guillermo del Toro has long been fascinated by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a novel he has described as “one of the greatest stories about humanity ever written.” After decades of planning, rewriting and waiting for the right moment, he finally began production on his own film version. His goal is to reinterpret the classic story while staying emotionally faithful to the original themes.

1 [ ]

Since childhood, del Toro has sympathised with the creature. For him, the monster is not simply a symbol of fear, but a portrait of someone desperate for acceptance. This emotional complexity is central to the way he wants to tell the story.

2 [ ]

The casting reflects this ambition. Del Toro selected actors with whom he had already developed strong creative relationships. He needed performers capable of expressing vulnerability, rage and tenderness in a character-driven narrative. Their performances will carry much of the emotional weight of the film.

3 [ ]

Visually, del Toro plans to combine traditional effects with cutting-edge technology. He has often argued that physical costumes and handmade designs allow actors to connect more deeply with their roles. At the same time, digital tools can enhance the scale and atmosphere of the film.

4 [ ]

What makes this adaptation particularly interesting is the director’s intention to focus on identity, otherness and belonging rather than straightforward horror. He wants to explore the ethical responsibilities of creation and the cost of rejecting someone who seeks love.

5 [ ]

Although fans are excited, the production has faced challenges. Designing the monster alone required months of experimentation. Del Toro insisted that the creature should look tragic rather than monstrous, which demanded detailed research into anatomy, movement and expression.

6 [ ]

As release approaches, critics and audiences are already predicting that del Toro’s Frankenstein may become one of his most significant works. If successful, it could redefine how modern cinema interprets classic literature, blending Gothic tradition with contemporary emotional storytelling.
