🏛️ EOI WRITTEN MEDIATION TASK – LEVEL B1 & B2
✈️ TOPIC: Travelling to Bali or Lombok
Context: Your British friend Olivia wants to visit Indonesia but can’t decide between Bali and Lombok. She’s found two articles online describing both islands, but they’re too long and confusing. You’ve read them and now need to summarise the main ideas and give your own recommendation.
🕐 Write between 70–90 words (B1) or 90–110 words (B2).💡 Don’t copy sentences from the texts — summarise naturally and clearly.
🌺 Text 1 – Bali: lively, cultural, and full of energy
Bali is the most famous island in Indonesia, often called the “Island of the Gods.” It’s known for its beautiful temples, rice terraces, and artistic towns like Ubud. The island offers a perfect mix of tradition and modern life — in the same day, you can visit an ancient temple, take a yoga class, and enjoy dinner at a stylish beach restaurant. Bali is ideal for people who like culture, adventure, and social life. There are endless options for surfing, shopping, or relaxing in spas. However, it can get very crowded in tourist areas, especially during the summer. Traffic is often slow, and accommodation can be expensive compared to other parts of Indonesia.
🌴 Text 2 – Lombok: peaceful nature and local charm
Lombok, located just east of Bali, is smaller and much quieter. It’s often described as “how Bali used to be” — a place with natural beauty and fewer tourists. The island has amazing white-sand beaches, clear blue waters, and the impressive Mount Rinjani, a popular destination for hikers. Lombok is perfect for those who love peace, adventure, and authentic local culture. Prices are more affordable, and you can still find small villages that keep their traditional way of life. However, the island has fewer restaurants, shops, and nightlife options. Transport is limited too, so most visitors rent scooters or cars to explore freely.
✉️ TASK
Write an email to Olivia explaining the main points about both destinations and recommending which island you think would be better for her.
💬 MODEL ANSWER (B1 – 89 words)
Hi Olivia, I’ve read about both islands. Bali is the most famous one — it’s full of culture, temples, beaches, and fun things to do. You can surf, visit markets, and enjoy the nightlife, but it’s very busy and more expensive. Lombok is smaller and quieter, with amazing beaches and mountains. It’s cheaper but has fewer restaurants and activities. If you want peace and nature, Lombok is perfect. But if you prefer something lively with lots to do, Bali is the best choice. I’d choose Bali myself.
💬 MODEL ANSWER (B2 – 109 words)
Hi Olivia, Both islands sound wonderful, but they offer very different experiences. Bali is the lively, cultural heart of Indonesia, full of temples, art, and entertainment. You can surf, enjoy local food, and explore nature, but it’s often crowded and quite pricey. Lombok, on the other hand, is quieter, cheaper, and ideal for nature lovers. It has beautiful beaches and volcano hikes, but fewer restaurants and less nightlife. If you’re looking for calm, authenticity, and outdoor adventure, Lombok is your best option. However, if you enjoy culture, energy, and variety, Bali would suit you better. Personally, I’d pick Bali for its diversity and atmosphere.
