Module 4 Reading. Tips & Practice

Updated: Dec 29, 2025

🔑 Master Key & Strategic Tips

Task 1: Advanced Multiple Choice Cloze

  • 1. Touted: Unlike "hailed," touted implies a degree of aggressive promotion or persistent advertisement, often with a hint of skepticism from the writer.

  • 7. Relegated: In C1/C2, relegated is the precise verb for a forced reduction in status or importance within a hierarchy.

Task 2: Long Reading (Inference)

  • Question 4 (Expertise): Benjamin’s critique of "citizen journalism" highlights the death of expertise. Students must understand that at this level, "citizen journalism" is contrasted with "rigorous verification" and "professional standards."

Task 3: Open Cloze (Inversions)

  • Gap 4 (Were): This is a conditional inversion.

    • Standard: If objective truth were to be restored...

    • Inverted: Were objective truth to be restored...

    • Tip: Teach students that if they see a subject followed by a "to + infinitive," the most common inversion is Were.

Task 4: Structural Synthesis (Headings)

  • Paragraph C (ii): Algorithmic ontology. Students should recognize ontology as the "nature of being." The text argues that algorithms redefine the "user" as an emotional target for money, not a human citizen. This is an ontological change.

  • Paragraph D (vii): Manufactured Consent. This is a classic C2 media term (coined by Noam Chomsky). The text describes "cognitive reinforcement" and "curated content" to create bias, which perfectly fits this heading.
