📘 B1 Teacher's Guide: Tips & Models

  • Tip: Focus on "Linking words" (But, However, Because, Also). In B1, the structure must be clear: Intro, Body, Conclusion.

  • Key Vocab: Pollution, environment, expensive, recycle, useful.

B1 Model Answer (Essay): Nowadays, many people are talking about electric cars. I think they are a good idea for the planet, but there are some problems. Firstly, electric cars are very expensive. Most young people don't have enough money to buy one. They are much dearer than petrol cars. Secondly, it is difficult to charge the battery. If you live in a small flat, you cannot charge it at home. Also, there aren't many charging points in small towns. In my opinion, the government should make these cars cheaper. If they cost less, more people will help the environment. In conclusion, electric cars are the future, but they need to be more practical for everyone.

🎓 Level 2: B2 Upper-Intermediate (FCE)

Focus: Logical argument, variety of vocabulary, and formal/informal register.

Part 1: Compulsory Essay

  1. You have listened to a radio programme about the environmental impact of transport. Is switching to electric vehicles enough to save the planet?

  2. Notes:

    • Problems with making batteries.

    • The importance of public transport.

    • (Your own idea).

Write your essay (140–190 words).

Part 2: Choice

  1. Article: "Talking to the Skeptics" How can we convince people who don't care about the environment? Is it better to show them facts or to talk about their own lives? Write an article for a local blog.

  2. Report: You work for a company that wants to be more "green". Your manager has asked you to write a report about how the office can save energy and reduce waste. Suggest two or three changes. Write your report.

📘 B2 Teacher's Guide: Tips & Models

  • Tip: At B2, use more advanced structures like Passive Voice or Relative Clauses. Avoid repeating words (use individuals instead of people).

  • Key Vocab: Carbon footprint, sustainable, renewable energy, implement, awareness.

B2 Model Answer (Essay): It is often said that electric vehicles (EVs) are the best solution to climate change. While they are certainly better than petrol cars, we must consider if they are truly "clean". One major concern is the production of batteries. To make a battery, companies need to mine materials like lithium. This process can damage the local environment and uses a lot of energy. Therefore, a new electric car has a high "carbon footprint" before it even starts moving. Furthermore, we should not only focus on cars. Improving public transport is perhaps more important. If trains and buses were cheaper and faster, fewer people would need to own a private vehicle, which would reduce traffic and pollution significantly. In my view, we also need to change our lifestyle and walk or cycle more often for short journeys. To sum up, electric cars are a step in the right direction, but they are not a perfect solution. We need to combine this technology with better public transport and more awareness about our energy use to protect the environment effectively.
