EOI B1&B2 5 Reading. Tips & Practice

🔑 Tips for Every Part: Social Problems & Inequality

📖 Task 1: Paraphrasing & Inference

  • Sticky Floor vs. Glass Ceiling: Students must understand the metaphor. The "sticky floor" is the opposite of the "glass ceiling." The correct answer for question 4 focuses on the inability to get promoted.

  • Structural Change: The author emphasizes that charity is not enough. The answer for question 5 must contain synonyms for "government policy" or "structural reform."

🧠 Task 2: Precision & Register

  • The "Partnership" Rule: In Gap (1), while "signs" and "marks" are similar, we use "signs of inequality" when describing visible evidence in a city.

  • Verb Context: In Gap (4), health doesn't "fail" in a general sense here; we are looking for the noun/verb used for a specific downward trend. However, in B2, a decline in health is the more formal academic register.

✍️ Task 3 & 4: Grammar & Word Shifts

  • Inversion/Linkers: In Part 3, Gap 5 is the "star" gap. Starting a sentence with a conditional meaning often requires "Unless" (If not).

  • The Suffix Search: In Part 4, Gap (2) is the trickiest. Students see "EQUAL" and think "Equality," but the context of "being tired of" requires the negative "Inequality."

🔄 Task 5: The B2 Tense Shift

  • The Regret Pattern: Question 5 ("wish the council had invested") tests the use of WISH for past regrets. This requires the Past Perfect.

  • Passive Voice: Question 2 ("is being built") tests the Present Continuous Passive. This is a high-frequency item in EOI B2 exams.
