EOI B1&B2 Module 1: READING. Tips & Practice

SOME TIPS:

🧠 Part 2: Multiple Choice Cloze (Collocations & Precision)

  • The "Partnership" Rule: At the B2 level, we test words that always go together. In Question 1, we use taking steps; we don't "make" or "do" steps when referring to legal actions.

  • Verb-Noun Agreement: In Question 2, while "provides," "offers," and "makes" are similar, we provide jobs. This is a fixed professional collocation common in EOI exams.

  • Phrasal Verb Logic: In the "A Greener Lifestyle" text, pay attention to the particles. We run out of resources (Question 6); we don't "go out of" or "stay out of" them in this context.

📖 Part 1 & 6: Detailed Reading & Reconstruction (Cohesion)

  • Paraphrase Detection: In Part 1, the text mentions "Truly connect with the local culture." The correct answer (Question 1) uses deeper connection. B2 exams rarely use the same words in the text and the answer.

  • The Pronoun Path: In Part 6 (Text Reconstruction), look for pronouns like "This," "These," or "It." If Gap 2 says "These were thoroughly cleaned," the sentence before must mention a plural noun, like bottles or flakes.

  • Logical Contrast: Look for "But" or "However." If a paragraph describes a benefit and the next sentence starts with a gap, look for an option that introduces a challenge or disadvantage.

✍️ Part 3 & 4: Open Cloze & Word Formation (Grammar Mechanics)

  • The "Glue" Words: In Part 3, the gaps are usually prepositions or linkers. In Question 1, "responsible for" is a fixed prepositional phrase. In Question 5, "Even though" is a classic B2 contrast linker.

  • Suffix Awareness: In Part 4, identify the "job" of the word. If you see "The _______ of the forest," the "The" tells you that you need a Noun, so you change Destroy to Destruction.

  • Negative Prefixes: Always check if the sentence needs an opposite. If a text says a situation is bad, you might need to change Advise to Inadvisable or Fair to Unfair.

📑 Part 5: Key Word Transformation (The "Golden Rules")

  • Count Your Words: You must use between 2 and 5 words. If you write 6, you get 0 points, even if the grammar is perfect. Remember: don't = 2 words, isn't = 2 words.

  • The "Keyword" Anchor: The word in brackets (WISH, SHOULD, IF) is your anchor. You cannot change it to "WISHED" or "SHOULDN'T." It must remain exactly as printed.

  • Tense Shifting: EOI B2 often tests the "Regret" structure. If the first sentence is in the past ("I didn't buy"), the second sentence with WISH must move one step back to the Past Perfect ("I wish I had bought").

⚡ General B1/B2 Test-Taking Tip:

The "Grammar Scan": In the Open Cloze and Word Formation parts, if you are stuck, ask yourself: "Am I missing a preposition, an article, or a relative pronoun?" 90% of B1/B2 gaps are filled by these three categories. If the sentence feels "empty" but the meaning is clear, you are likely missing a small "grammar bridge" word.
