EOI B1&B2 Module 2. LISTENING. Tips & Practice

🎧 Part 1: Multiple Choice (The "But" Pivot)

  • Concrete Tip: In the Environment Exam (Q1), the man mentions the cost of solar power first, but then says, "What really keeps me up at night, though, is the local bird population."

    • Student Strategy: Tell them to ignore the first thing they hear. The answer usually comes after a contrast word like "Though," "However," or "Actually."

  • Concrete Tip: In the Health Exam (Q1), the woman mentions she was frustrated at first.

    • Student Strategy: B2 level often asks about the final feeling. She might start frustrated but end "relieved." They must listen to the very end of the 30-second clip.

✍️ Part 2: Sentence Completion (The Grammar Trap)

This is the hardest part because they have to type the words.

  • Concrete Tip (Environment): The answer is "grinding grain." If a student writes "grind grain," it is grammatically incorrect in the sentence.

    • Student Strategy: Read the sentence with the word. "Early turbines were used for grind grain" sounds wrong. It must be "grinding."

  • Concrete Tip (Health): The answer is "sixty-six days."

    • Student Strategy: In B2, numbers can be written as digits (66) or words (sixty-six). Tell them to choose the one they are faster at typing so they don't miss the next question.

🧩 Part 3: Multiple Matching (Synonym Hunting)

In the Zero-Waste and Health Motivation sections, the words in the options will not match the audio.

  • Concrete Tip (Environment - Speaker 1): The option says "Reduce carbon footprint." The speaker will likely say: "I was worried about my personal impact on the planet's emissions."

    • Student Strategy: Match the concept, not the word. If they hear the exact word "footprint" in the audio, it's likely a trap for a different speaker!

  • Concrete Tip (Health - Speaker 2): The option is "Social media challenge." The speaker might say: "Everyone on my feed was doing this 30-day yoga thing, so I jumped in."

    • Student Strategy: They should look for the "Who" or "Where." If it mentions "Instagram," "TikTok," or "Online feed," match it to Social Media.

🗣️ Part 4: The Interview (The Question Map)

For the interviews with Sarah Jenkins and Mark Hales, students often get lost.

  • Concrete Tip: The interviewer is their "GPS."

    • Environment : When the interviewer says "Let’s move on to electric cars," students must immediately look at Question 25.

    • Health : When they hear "What about frozen food?", they must be on Question 26.

  • Concrete Tip (The "Double Negative"): In the Nutrition interview, Mark might say, "It’s not that breakfast is essential for everyone..."

    • Student Strategy: Students often hear "essential" and pick the wrong answer. Tell them to listen for "Not that..." or "It's a myth that..." which indicates the speaker disagrees with that point.

Summary Checklist for your Students

  1. Part 1: Wait for the "Pivot" (the second half of the clip).

  2. Part 2: Double-check the grammar and spelling.

  3. Part 3: Find the synonym, avoid "word-spotting."

  4. Part 4: Use the interviewer’s questions to stay on track.
