🎧 Part 1: Multiple Choice
Topic: Journalism, News Feeds, Deepfakes
Tip: The "Verification" Distractor. In Q1, the journalist mentions deadlines and criticism, but the correct answer is "Verifying sources."
Student Strategy: Listen for words like "investigating," "checking facts," or "authenticity." These are synonyms for "verifying." Just because he mentions "time" (deadlines) doesn't mean that's his main problem.
Tip: The "Echo Chamber" Concept. In Q4, the woman is unhappy.
Student Strategy: Make sure students understand what an "echo chamber" is—only seeing opinions you already agree with. If they hear her say, "I'm tired of only seeing people who think exactly like me," that's the answer.
✍️ Part 2: Sentence Completion
Topic: Media Evolution (Dr. Sarah Bennett)
Tip: Historical Context. This part follows a timeline.
Student Strategy: Use the dates mentioned in the audio (20th century, modern day) as "anchor points." If they miss Q9 (printing press), they should listen for "early 20th century" to prepare for Q10 (radio).
Tip: Compound Words & Terms. Words like "clickbait" (Q11) and "news cycle" (Q14) are very specific to this topic.
Student Strategy: If they hear a word that sounds like two words joined together, it’s likely the answer. Remind them that for "six times" (Q15), they can write the number "6" to save time.
🧩 Part 3: Multiple Matching
Topic: Quitting News Sources
Tip: Emotional Synonyms. Speaker 2 stops because of "Anxiety."
Student Strategy: The speaker won't say "I was anxious." They will say, "It was affecting my sleep," "I felt overwhelmed," or "My mental health was suffering."
Tip: Identifying "Bias." Speaker 3 mentions "Political bias."
Student Strategy: Listen for mentions of "sides," "unfairness," or "leaning one way." If the speaker says the news source "always favored the same party," that matches Option A.
🗣️ Part 4: Multiple Choice (Q24–30)
Topic: Interview with Leo Thorne
Tip: Leo’s "Attitude". B2 questions often ask how a person feels.
Student Strategy: In Q26, Leo is "cautiously optimistic." This means he is happy but still a little bit worried. Listen for phrases like "There’s hope, but we have to be careful."
Tip: The "Money" Shock. In Q29, the answer is the "money earned" by fake news.
Student Strategy: Students might expect him to be shocked by "Deepfakes" (Q29c). However, in FCE, the "shock" is usually something surprising or unexpected. Listen for the word "profit," "earnings," or "lucrative business."
