🧠 Strategic Breakdown: Crimes & Punishments


Task 1: Paraphrasing

  • Rehabilitation: Students must understand that "transforming the offender" is the same as "reform" (Question 2).

  • Cybercrime Challenges: Look for the word "designed" in the text and match it with "current laws were made for physical crimes" in the answer.


Task 2: Precision & Register

  • Collocation Check: In Gap (1), we talk about "financial gain" (beneficio económico), not "prize" or "gift." In Gap (5), we prevent a crime before it happens.

  • Vocabulary Level: Words like "devastating" (Gap 4) are typical B2 distractors; students must recognize the scale of white-collar crime.


Task 3 & 4: Grammar & Word Shifts

  • Inversions & Fixed Phrases: "At random" and "Whether... or" are essential.

  • Suffixes: In Word Formation, changing "EXIST" to "EXISTING" (Gap 6) requires understanding that it acts as an adjective for "facilities."


Task 5: The B2 Tense Shift

  • Regret & Passive: Question 5 ("wish... had been caught") and Question 2 ("is being interviewed") are the most points-heavy.

  • Reported Speech: "Warned someone not to do something" is a classic B2 trap.


Task 6: "Cohesion Rules":

  • The "Noun-to-Pronoun" Link: If a sentence mentions an alarm, look for a gap that starts with "This sound" or "It".

  • Chronology is Key: A heist has a beginning (planning), middle (action/panic), and end (consequence). If a sentence talks about "The next hour," it cannot be the first or last gap.

  • Logical Contrast: Look for words like "Instead of", "However", or "At first". They signal a change in the story's direction. For example, if they were "planning" but then "trapped," a contrast sentence is needed.


Task 7: Logic Test

  • Scanning: For Anita (D), students should scan for "restorative" or "victim." For Mark (A), they should look for "retribution" or "prison cell."
