EOI B1 B2 Module 6. WRITING. Tips

🎓 Level 1: B1 Intermediate

Part 1: The Compulsory Essay

Word count: 100–120 words

Instructions: You have had a class discussion on crime in cities.

"Is your city a safe place to live?"

Notes:

  • Street crime (pickpockets, theft).

  • Police presence (more police on the streets).

  • (Your own idea).

Part 2: The Article (B1 Elective)

Word count: 100–120 words

Task: "TV Crime Shows: Why do we love them?" We are looking for articles for a film and TV blog. Why are series about detectives and crimes so popular? Do you think they show real life? What is your favorite show? Write your article.

📘 B1 Teacher's Guide: Tips & Models

Strategy: Diferenciar bien entre el nombre del crimen (theft) y el criminal (thief). Usar conectores de contraste simples como but o however.

Key Vocab (B1): Safe, dangerous, steal, thief, prison, fine, judge, catch.

B1 Model Answer (Essay): In my opinion, my city is generally a safe place, but there are some problems with small crimes. For example, there are many pickpockets in the city center where the tourists are.

First, I think we need more police officers on the streets. If people see the police, they feel safer and criminals are afraid to steal. Second, the government should put more cameras in public parks.

In my view, some punishments are too light. For instance, if someone steals a phone, they should pay a big fine. In conclusion, my city is good, but we must improve security to protect everyone.

🎓 Level 2: B2 Upper-Intermediate

Part 1: The Compulsory Essay

Word count: 140–190 words

Instructions: You have watched a documentary about prison systems.

"Should prisons focus on punishment or rehabilitation?"

Notes:

  • Reducing the crime rate (preventing future crimes).

  • Helping prisoners find a job after prison.

  • (Your own idea).

Part 2: The Report (B2 Elective)

Word count: 140–190 words

Task: You work for the local council. There has been an increase in cybercrime (scams, identity theft) among elderly people in your neighborhood. Write a report explaining the situation and suggesting two measures to increase their safety.

📘 B2 Teacher's Guide: Tips & Models

Strategy: Usar el "Passive Voice" (típico de contextos legales: He was sentenced to...) y estructuras condicionales para proponer soluciones.

Key Vocab (B2): Rehabilitate, offender, sentence, trial, deter, shoplifting, burglary, community service.

B2 Model Answer (Essay): The purpose of the justice system is a topic of constant debate. While some people believe that criminals should be severely punished, others argue that rehabilitation is the only way to reduce crime in the long term.

On the one hand, prisons should provide education and psychological support. If offenders learn a trade or a profession while they are in jail, they will be able to find a job after they are released. Consequently, they are less likely to commit another crime.

On the other hand, many citizens feel that strict sentences are necessary to deter people from breaking the law. For example, for serious crimes, a long prison sentence is seen as a matter of justice for the victims.

In my opinion, a balance is needed. For minor offenses, such as shopliftingcommunity service might be more effective than prison. However, for dangerous criminals, security must be the priority.

To conclude, if we want a safer society, we should invest more in social programs to prevent crime instead of only focusing on punishment.
