EOI B1&B2 Module 8. LISTENING. Tips & Practice

SOME TIPS:

💡 Part 1: Multiple Choice (Short Extracts)

  • The "Agreement" Trap: In questions where two people are talking (like Q2), they will often disagree at first. One might say the book was great, and the other might say it was boring. Wait for them to reach a shared conclusion (e.g., "You're right, the ending was a bit obvious").

  • Focus on the "Why": Questions often ask for an opinion or a reason. Don't just listen for the word "movie" or "book"; listen for the adjectives the speaker uses (e.g., disappointing, deep, predictable, unique).

  • Watch for "Sleeper" Terms: This topic uses specific jargon. Ensure students understand terms like "Media Hype" or "Sleeper Hit" before they listen.

✍️ Part 2: Sentence Completion (Jaws History)

  • Numerical Accuracy: Part 2 in this exam contains several numbers (125, 20, 44, 175,000). Tell students to write the digits (e.g., 125) rather than the words to avoid spelling mistakes and save time.

  • Check the Part of Speech: Look at the words before the gap. If it says "survive as a...", the answer must be a noun/profession (writer). If it says "earn $100...", the answer must be a unit (million).

  • The "Context" Read: During the 45 seconds of preparation, students should read the sentences to predict the story. This helps them stay focused when the audio skips through different years of production.

🧩 Part 3: Multiple Matching (Media Choices)

  • Paraphrasing is Everything: You will almost never hear the exact words from the options in the audio.

    • Option A (Social Media) ➔ Audio: "I saw a TikTok about it."

    • Option F (Cover Art) ➔ Audio: "The jacket of the book really caught my eye."

  • Don't "Word-Spot": If a speaker mentions their "family" (Option D) but only to say they didn't listen to them, that is a trap. They must be matching the core reason for their choice.

  • The Second Listen: Use the first listening to make a "best guess" and the second listening to confirm the specific synonym used.

🎙️ Part 4: Multiple Choice Interview (Media Analyst)

  • Interviewer as a Map: The interviewer’s questions usually introduce the next exam question. When you hear the interviewer say, "Let's talk about the future," your eyes should move to Question 30.

  • Opinion Markers: Sarah will give a lot of information, but the questions ask for her belief. Listen for phrases like: "In my view," "I'm convinced that," or "What's truly fascinating is..."

  • The "Trend" Trap: Media topics often discuss "Current Trends" vs. "Future Predictions." Make sure the student doesn't confuse what is happening now (Question 29) with what Sarah thinks will happen later (Question 30).

📋 Key Vocabulary to Review

  • Box Office: The total amount of money a movie makes.

  • Sequel: A book or movie that continues the story of a previous one.
